Waking up with a sharp, stiff neck that limits your movement — often called a “crick” in the neck — is a common and uncomfortable experience. While it typically resolves within a few days, understanding why it happens can help you prevent it in future.

What’s Actually Happening

Sleeping in an awkward position for an extended period can cause a small facet joint in the neck to become irritated, or place one side of the neck’s muscles under sustained stretch while the other shortens. When you wake and try to move, the affected muscles go into protective spasm, creating the sudden stiffness and sharp pain many people describe.

Common Triggers

  • Sleeping without adequate pillow support, allowing the neck to drop into an unsupported position.
  • Falling asleep in an unusual spot — like a couch or chair — without proper neck alignment.
  • A pillow that’s too high, too flat, or the wrong shape for your sleep position.
  • Pre-existing neck tension or stress that makes the area more vulnerable to irritation.
  • Sudden temperature changes, such as a draft or air conditioning directly on the neck overnight.

What Helps in the First Few Days

Gentle movement within a comfortable range, rather than complete stillness, helps prevent the area from stiffening further. Heat application can relax the muscle spasm, while over-the-counter pain relief can help you stay mobile during the acute phase.

Preventing Future Episodes

Investing in a supportive, appropriately sized pillow matched to your sleep position is the single most effective preventative step. Reducing overall neck tension through regular stretching and stress management can also make the neck less prone to these acute episodes.

When It’s More Than a Crick

If the stiffness doesn’t ease within 3–5 days, or if it’s accompanied by pain radiating into the arm, numbness, or tingling, it’s worth getting assessed rather than assuming it will resolve on its own.
