A stiff, achy neck can affect everything from your concentration to your sleep. Regular stretching is one of the most effective ways to ease this discomfort, restoring mobility and reducing the muscular tension that builds up from posture, stress, and repetitive movement.
10 Stretches to Try
- Chin tucks — draw the chin straight back to align the head over the spine.
- Neck side bend — tilt your ear toward your shoulder, holding gently.
- Neck rotation — slowly turn your head to look over each shoulder.
- Levator scapulae stretch — look toward your armpit while gently pulling the head forward.
- Upper trapezius stretch — combine a side bend with gentle overpressure from your hand.
- Shoulder rolls — release tension through the upper back and shoulders.
- Doorway chest stretch — opens the chest to reduce the forward-shoulder pull on the neck.
- Seated cat-cow — mobilises the upper spine, which supports neck movement.
- Ear-to-shoulder with rotation — a combined stretch targeting multiple neck muscles.
- Isometric neck holds — gently press your head into your hand without movement to build control.
How Often to Stretch
Short, frequent stretching sessions — a few minutes, two or three times a day — tend to be more effective for neck stiffness than one long session. This keeps tissues consistently mobile rather than only addressing tension after it’s built up.
What to Avoid
Avoid forceful neck rotations, especially combined with extension (looking up and turning at the same time), as this position can be more likely to irritate sensitive structures in the neck. Movement should always feel controlled and gentle.
Addressing the Root Cause
Stretching relieves symptoms, but if your stiffness keeps returning, there’s likely an underlying contributor — posture, stress, sleep position, or joint restriction — that needs to be addressed directly for lasting relief.
